Maija Knapp grew up in a mountainous area of New York, where she started dancing at age 3 and teaching by age 12 a variety of styles including ballet, contemporary, theatre, hip hop, jazz, and improvisation. At 17 she moved to New York City where she was signed to MSA, and began her professional career. In New York she starred in the Off-Broadway Immersive Theatre hit, Seeing You, directed by Randy Weiner of Sleep No More, and Co-Directed/Choreographed by the prolific Ryan Heffington, best known for his work with Sia. Maija went on to participate in Spike Jonze’s NYFW theatre piece in the East Village titled Changers, and participated in many other commercial works. Eventually, she ventured to Los Angeles where she currently resides and has worked with many artists including Vivienne Westwood, Balmain X Puma, Katy Perry, Karen O., Edgar Wright, Beck, Miguel, Dua Lipa, Brooke Candy, Yves Tumor, Shisedo, Phillippa Price, Vance Joy, Sia, Opening Ceremony, Floria Sigismondi, and more. Besides the commercial work, Maija explored her deepest interest of experimental dance work, in performances like the co-choreographed trio she performed at the Hollywood Bowl with Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, and other underground works with choreographers Jasmine Albuquerque, Nina McNeely, Ryan Heffington, and Jen Rose. Maija focuses on the physical, the messy, and emoting subconscious dwellings. She looks forwards to exploring grounded, yet transcendent works and representing women in non-passive manifestations of self.
